Looking at the private courtyard and sophisticated interiors today, it is difficult to imagine the deterioration the house once faced. In the story shared by its current owner, restoring it was a deeply personal choice: a commitment to give a place with a memory a future.
The foundations: a name preserved from old Bucharest
The name T. Nicolau pays tribute to the residence’s origins. Historian Theo Ulieriu-Rostás dates construction to around 1860 and the redecoration of the façade to 1870, when Tănase Nicolau is documented as owner. After the Union of the Principalities, Bucharest was transforming its streets and architecture; this house became part of that changing city. Explore the historical study ↗
Some buildings preserve a person’s name more clearly than a biography. Tănase Nicolau House is one such place. Its architect remains unknown, but the façade, described in the study through its Neoclassical vocabulary and Rundbogenstil accents, retains its character after more than a century and a half.
A thread through history: from Tănase Nicolau to Dr Victor Gomoiu
The 20th century brought another chapter: the historical study records Dr Victor Gomoiu (1882–1960) as owner circa 1937–1950. A surgeon, medical historian and former Minister of Health, he connected medical practice with research and culture. His name lives on at the Dr Victor Gomoiu Children’s Hospital.
For travellers interested in heritage tourism in Romania, that connection lends a human dimension to a stay. The house carries traces of people whose lives formed part of the city’s history. Read about Victor Gomoiu’s life ↗
In the account shared by the current owner, the purchase from heirs marked the beginning of the residence’s rescue. Years of deterioration had left their mark. Bringing the house back to life would require patience, resources and a vision that could look beyond its condition.
A revival shaped by precision and a love of art
The current owner, a dentist with a passion for history, architecture and art, chose to invest in the house’s restoration. Attention to detail, balanced forms and a concern for beauty became guiding principles of its transformation.
His identity remains discreet. The house, its collection and the dialogue between them tell the story of that passion. His dream is to introduce the residence to the world through its history, architecture and art.
